Turramurra - Chinese New Year 2017

NI'S VISIT TO THE BUMBLEBEE ROOM

Ni (Ray's Mum) came to talk to the Bumblebees today about Chinese New Year traditions. She introduced us to some of the Chinese words in the story that we read yesterday "New Year Surprise"

Ni talked about how Chinese people like to do big clean ups in their houses at this time and to hang red lanterns at the front door for good luck. It is also a time to eat special foods such as dumplings and sugared fruits.

During this time the children are given special red "lucky packets" with money inside. She brought "real" money - notes and coins from China to show the children. Ray and Olivia helped to hand them out to the children to look at.

After this wonderful sharing experience, the children moved on to their indoor experiences and many chose to make their own red lucky packet.

A very big thank you to Ni for coming into Beehive to include us all in this wonderful cultural exchange.

CELEBRATING PARTNERSHIPS WITH FAMILIES AND CULTURAL COMPETENCE

Cultural competence is about understanding our own culture and background as well as being open and respectful to other cultures. Culture is the fundamental building block of identity and the development of a strong cultural identity is essential to children's healthy sense of who they are and where they belong.
